Plans for a new convenience store in the £130m Millers Quay development at Wirral Waters have been submitted to Wirral Council. The proposed store, strategically located on the corner of Dock Road and Duke Street, aims to serve the growing residential community along Northbank.
If approved, this 4,300 sq ft purpose-built store will be sited on the doorstep of the Millers Quay residential development and within walking distance for local residents. The planned amenities include a free cash machine and collection points for selected online orders. The store will also be accessible from the quayside walkway along Northbank.
The store’s design incorporates various high-spec sustainability measures, such as being powered entirely by 100% renewable electricity and featuring 100% LED lighting throughout, reflecting the environmental commitments of the Wirral Waters development.
A significant aspect of the project is its alignment with local community and educational initiatives. The construction phase will involve students from the nearby Wirral Met College, providing them with hands-on experience and training opportunities.
David Pilbeam, Director of Acquisitions, Capital Projects and Engineering, highlighted the economic benefits, noting, “Once open, our investment at Wirral Waters will create jobs and a convenient new place for people to shop locally while putting high quality, great value products on their doorstep.”
Richard Mawdsley, Director of Development at Wirral Waters, emphasised the importance of such infrastructure for the area, stating, “This new store will be a very welcome addition to the regenerated Northbank neighbourhood. It is important that we build in walkable, ancillary amenity provision to support this growing community, while also encouraging much better connections into those main retail centres at Birkenhead, Liscard and Seacombe.” He added that the store would offer a diverse range of groceries and convenience foods, enhancing the living standards of the local community.
Moreover, Mawdsley pointed out the store’s dual role in both economic and environmental sustainability, asserting that job creation and training opportunities are integral to the project’s design and construction phases. “It is crucial that the store – including in its design and construction – brings benefits to the local community, by providing jobs and training opportunities, but also that it meets the high standards of sustainability that we employ across the whole Wirral Waters development.”
The proposed store at Millers Quay represents a significant advancement in community infrastructure and sustainability for Wirral Waters. Pending approval, construction is anticipated to commence in 2025, with completion expected by late 2025 or early 2026.
