A new clean transport strategy is set to transform East Runcorn.
The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority has allocated nearly £18 million for the project, aiming to enhance sustainable transport, employment, and housing in the area.
The initial phase of funding, totalling £17.5 million, is allocated to developing new pedestrian and cycle routes along the A56. This includes widening footpaths and enhancing existing infrastructure, such as pedestrian crossings and road surfaces. The project is part of the East Runcorn Connectivity scheme, aiming to create safe, high-quality travel routes linking the town centre with key locations like Runcorn East rail station, Sci-Tech Daresbury, and Daresbury Garden Village.
The broader strategy aims to deliver a 600km network of walking and cycling routes across the Liverpool City Region. This expansive network will span six boroughs: Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens, and Wirral. Over 260km of these routes are expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
Additional phases of the project are currently under development by Halton Council. These plans will be presented to the combined authority later this year.
According to Rotheram, more than £70 million has already been invested across all six boroughs to upgrade walking and cycling routes, connecting communities to previously inaccessible areas and opportunities.
Nelson stated, ‘It’s great to see investment in schemes which encourage sustainable modes of transport and enable network resilience in the borough.’
O’Brien remarked, ‘Linking communities, reducing carbon emissions, helping people to be healthier – schemes like this one give us an amazing opportunity to help change the way we think about travelling around our local area.’
Looking ahead, the combined authority is optimistic about the scheme’s potential to serve as a model for future sustainable transport projects across the UK.
The East Runcorn Connectivity scheme represents a crucial investment in creating sustainable, efficient, and safe transport options for the community.
With comprehensive plans and substantial funding, the initiative is set to significantly enhance the region’s infrastructure, promoting healthier lifestyles and environmental benefits.
