The Manchester basketball scene is set to witness a significant shift as the American-based Sherwood Family Investment Office takes ownership of the city’s men’s and women’s professional basketball teams.
This acquisition marks a new chapter for both teams, promising fresh energy and stability under new leadership.
New Ownership Announcement
Led by CEO Ned Sherwood and President Ben Pierson, the Sherwood Family Investment Office has acquired the Manchester franchise for both men’s and women’s professional basketball teams.
With Basketball League Limited previously holding the professional league license before it was revoked, the existing Manchester Giants brand is expected to evolve under a new identity as it joins the Super League Basketball (SLB). The women’s team will continue to compete in their elite competition.
Sherwood’s Vision for Manchester
Ned Sherwood, whose career began at AEA Investors and who founded ZS Fund LP, brings decades of experience in managing private equity firms. He now aims to apply his expertise to the Manchester basketball teams.
“The new energy of the league is palpable. We are thrilled to be a part of this exciting turning point in professional basketball in Great Britain,” said Sherwood.
He emphasized the goal of building high-quality businesses with top-level management teams, aiming for long-term success.
Community and Culture Focus
Ben Pierson highlighted Manchester as a world-class city for sport and culture. He stressed the importance of restoring stability to the franchise while growing partnerships within the community.
“Basketball in Manchester is integral to schools, youth, and culture. We aim to bring the franchise back to competing for trophies,” Pierson added.
The new leadership plans to focus on actions that will deliver real results for the community.
Former Player Takes Leadership Role
The franchise welcomes back Dominique Allen, a former operations manager and highly decorated women’s player, in a promoted role as head of operations.
Allen expressed her excitement about the new era for the club, acknowledging the patience of fans and partners. More details on the Super League Basketball season will be announced soon.
Future Plans and Goals
The new ownership is committed to developing a sustainable and elite franchise for Manchester, focusing on top-level management and community partnerships.
Sherwood’s family office is known for global investments in various projects, bringing a partnership focus and problem-solving mindset.
The transition of Manchester basketball to new American ownership is set to bring fresh energy and stability to the teams.
