Later this month, the Albert Dock Hidden Histories will be accessible, inviting visitors to explore this iconic landmark through smartphones or computers. The launch will feature a free two-day event on May 20-21, including guided tours that will enrich the visitor experience with personal insights.
A Unique Event and Attractions
A vibrant, family-friendly celebration marks the launch of the digital trail. The event will provide free fairground rides for children, adding a fun element to educational tours. Technological Innovations in Heritage Exploration
The trail is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and created by Wide Sky Design, with curation by the National Museums Liverpool. It represents a milestone in digitising the dock’s heritage. The tool allows a switch between historical and contemporary views, revealing the dock’s evolving role over time.
Enriching the Visitor Experience
Clare Rawlinson, the marketing manager at Albert Dock Liverpool, emphasises the project’s goal to enhance the visitor journey. The trail is designed to be multifunctional and user-friendly, offering new insights into Albert Dock’s layered history. Emphasising discovery, it invites users to question what they know about the dock. Rawlinson states, “You think you know all there is to know? Well, you’ll be surprised!”
The Historical Significance of Albert Dock
Situated on Liverpool’s UNESCO World Heritage waterfront, Albert Dock boasts the largest group of Grade I listed buildings in the UK. Over six million visitors were drawn to its historical charm in 2016 alone. By tracing the dock’s past, users will uncover its significant contributions to Liverpool’s development as a global port city, enriching their understanding of its 170-year legacy.
Bridging Past and Present
Ian Murphy from the Merseyside Maritime Museum highlights the transformative journey of Albert Dock. Initially a bustling port area, it has transitioned into a cultural and leisure nexus.
