A significant milestone has been reached in Hull as the steelwork for Ideal Heating’s £19.2m UK Technology Centre is now completed.
The new research and development centre aims to support the creation of low carbon technologies such as heat pumps, marking a substantial investment in the city’s future. This project is backed by over £2m in seed capital funding from Humber Freeport, identified as crucial for regional decarbonisation and a net zero economy.
The UK Technology Centre, set to open in early 2025, will feature simulators, test rigs, and environmental chambers to enhance the efficiency and performance of Ideal Heating’s products. Jason Speedy, Chief Operations Officer, stated, “The UK Technology Centre represents a significant investment in more ways than one. We’re part-way through a £60m development programme…largely focused on heat pump production, distribution and innovation.” This facility is pivotal for Ideal Heating’s ongoing evolution in sustainable heating solutions.
Ideal Heating has been a key player in Hull since 1906 and currently employs around 800 people locally. The new centre will house advanced R&D teams tasked with innovating and testing new products. The 38,000 sq ft (3,500 sq m) building will have laboratories for simulating various conditions, a heat pump testing area, workshop spaces, and a training room.
The milestone was marked by an event attended by project partners, including Humber Freeport CEO Simon Green and Hull City Council Cllr Charles Quinn. Green commented, “Ideal Heating’s UK Technology Centre is a perfect example of…investment, innovation, and skilled job creation.” Quinn added, “Sustainability…connects businesses…across the city and wider region…[and] Ideal Heating is seizing these opportunities…to create an exciting future…”
Yorkshire-based Henry Boot Construction, appointed after a competitive tender process, leads the project. Craig Finn, Director, highlighted the company’s focus on sustainability and innovation, aligning with Ideal Heating’s goals. The centre will feature renewable energy solutions like roof-mounted solar panels and air source heat pumps, along with energy-efficient LED lighting and high-performance building materials to minimise energy use.
Ideal Heating’s new UK Technology Centre is a major step towards sustainable innovation in home heating. This project not only cements the company’s long-standing relationship with Hull but also marks a significant investment in the region’s green energy future.
