Civic leaders have welcomed BNY’s strategic relocation to 4 Angel Square in NOMA, which will consolidate its Manchester team in one prime location, marking the largest regional city office deal since 2020.
Sean Turner, Manchester Site Executive at BNY, confirmed that the financial services company will bring its teams together from various city locations. Turner stated, “Manchester is a key location for BNY. Our high-performing teams will come together in a prime city-centre office.”
The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation has a history in Manchester, initially moving to Piccadilly Gardens and later to Spinningfields in 2007. The new long-term lease at the 10-storey, net zero operational carbon building in NOMA will see BNY join prestigious tenants including Amazon and The Co-op. The area, located near Victoria station, also features venues such as New Century, dBs Institute, Allpress Espresso, and Skof restaurant.
Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, emphasized the significance of BNY’s investment, highlighting Manchester’s strengths in connectivity, liveability, and talent access. Burnham noted the role of a trade mission to BNY’s New York headquarters in strengthening this partnership. “This longstanding partnership supports Manchester as one of BNY’s strategic growth locations,” he said.
Councillor Bev Craig, Leader of Manchester City Council, praised NOMA as a regeneration model that has revitalised the city centre. She emphasized that this deal underscores investor confidence in Manchester’s potential for sustainable growth and job creation. Craig said, “This is a place of opportunity for our people and our communities.”
Peter Gallagher, a veteran agent representing MEPC/NOMA, described the agreement as a wake-up call to businesses regarding the need for quality office space in Manchester. He predicted a scramble for the remaining available space. “Manchester leads the regional ‘Big 6’ in average inward investment take-up for a reason,” Gallagher noted.
Paul Pavia, Commercial Director at MEPC, highlighted that the building’s sustainability credentials were pivotal in securing the lease with BNY. With plans for future phases, including 2 and 3 Angel Square, NOMA is poised for continued growth.
Chris Mulcahy, Director at JLL in Manchester, who represented BNY, called the acquisition of 4 Angel Square a rare and valuable opportunity. He noted, “Being able to acquire the whole of 4 Angel Square was a very rare opportunity that could not be missed.”
The relocation of BNY to 4 Angel Square not only consolidates its operations but also reinforces Manchester’s commercial prominence and potential for future growth.
