The construction of a £22m specialist education college has begun in Cheshire. The new facility is set to provide state-of-the-art amenities for students aged 16-25.
Expected to complete by autumn 2025, the project is managed by Preston-based Eric Wright Construction and aims to significantly improve educational resources for young people with complex disabilities.
Ground-breaking New Facility
Eric Wright Construction has initiated construction on a £22m college building for the Seashell Trust in Cheadle Hulme, Cheshire. This facility is designed for students aged 16-25 and will feature a range of specialised classrooms, as well as sports and administration facilities.
The new Royal College Manchester building includes a reception, a café, an activity hall with an extended climbing wall, a fitness suite, a rebound room, a sensory integration room, and a suite of flexible multi-purpose rooms at ground floor level. There will be contemporary office spaces above and external landscaping.
One of the most notable features is the creation of 12 new classrooms and six individual teaching spaces.
Enhanced Accessibility
Seashell Trust provides support for young people with complex disabilities and communication needs. The new college is specially equipped to allow staff and students to move with minimal restrictions.
This development replaces an older building that was not fit for purpose. It lacked the necessary adaptations for many students, some of whom use wheelchairs and other equipment.
Living On-Campus
Some students also reside on campus in neighbouring residential homes. The new building will allow for better integration of living and learning spaces.
The forethought in the building’s design emphasises the importance of easy movement between these spaces. It promises a more cohesive environment for both students and staff.
These upgrades will make a substantial difference in the daily lives of the students.
Collaborative Design Process
James Eager, Director Lead from Eric Wright Construction, explained, “The building has gone through a painstaking design and review process in collaboration with the Trust’s teaching team, with every element of its design tailored to meet the needs of the students.”
This meticulous planning ensures that every detail of the facility will cater specifically to the students’ requirements.

Brandon Leigh, Chief Executive at Seashell, expressed his excitement about the project. “Watching the building finally start to take shape is exciting and we can’t wait to see students and staff enjoying the building very soon,” he remarked.

Construction Timeline
Eric Wright began enabling works in January. The entire building is scheduled for completion by autumn 2025.
