In the aftermath of a weekend marred by far-right looting and violence, leaders across the North West are uniting to support the police and ensure public safety. The troubling events have left businesses counting the cost and communities in disarray.

Authorities are now scrutinising CCTV footage to identify and apprehend those involved in the unrest, with a stern message that further arrests will follow.

Incidents Across the North West

Over the weekend, towns and cities across the North West experienced violent disorder perpetrated by far-right groups. Significant clashes occurred in Manchester, Liverpool, and Blackpool, where public transport was disrupted as police enforced Section 34 dispersal orders.

In Manchester, rioters chanting ‘In-ger-lund’ and ‘Oh Tommy, Tommy’ looted a supermarket. The violence even extended to a brutal assault on a young black man in Piccadilly Gardens, who was attacked while on the ground. Greater Manchester has seen multiple arrests, and authorities vow that more will follow as they examine CCTV footage.

Official Responses

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham publicly thanked all officers and civilian staff who worked tirelessly throughout the day. ‘I will personally ensure GMP will have all the resources they need to maintain control of our streets — and law and order in our communities. All residents in Greater Manchester can be assured we can do everything within our power to keep you safe,’ he stated.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also condemned the far-right thuggery, asserting that participants in the violence would face the full force of the law. His strong stance indicates a zero-tolerance policy towards such public disorder.

Police Actions and Arrests

Police forces across the region have been active in making arrests. Merseyside Police confirmed that six people were charged following disorder in Southport, Liverpool city centre, and Walton over the past week.

Lancashire Police arrested 22 individuals across the county, with significant numbers detained in Blackpool. Of the 22 arrested, 18 have been released on police bail, one released under investigation, and three remain in custody. Dispersal orders were also issued in Lancaster, Blackpool, Preston, and Blackburn.

Public Reaction

Deputy Chief Constable Sam Mackenzie of Lancashire Constabulary emphasised that people should feel safe in their town and city centres without the threat of violence or disruption. He noted that those arrested were mainly local individuals intent on harming their communities, distinctly separating them from legitimate protesters.

He also extended gratitude to the affected communities for their patience and understanding during the disturbances, reassuring that public safety remains the police’s top priority.

Clashes at Events

The Rebellion punk festival in Blackpool became another flashpoint as attendees clashed with far-right troublemakers. The festival, known for celebrating punk culture, saw its festivities marred by confrontations with those intent on causing harm.

These incidents highlight the far-reaching impact of the disorder, affecting not just everyday life but also cultural events meant to foster unity and expression.

Police Commitment to Safety

Authorities are now meticulously examining CCTV footage to identify further perpetrators. This rigorous analysis underscores the commitment to holding all involved accountable and ensuring a swift return to peace and order.

The police have reiterated their dedication to safeguarding communities, pledging continual efforts to maintain public safety and prevent future disturbances.

Calls for Community Unity

Leaders and officials are calling for unity and resilience in the face of such disruptive events. The overarching message is one of coming together to support law enforcement and reinforce community bonds.

The events of the weekend have left an indelible mark on the North West. However, the collective resolve of leaders, police, and communities underscores a steadfast commitment to restoring peace.

Together, they are sending a strong message: such violence will not be tolerated, and unity will prevail in ensuring safer and stronger communities.
