This past week, Tech Manchester launched with impressive success, gathering over 100 attendees. More than 60 tech experts have dedicated their time to guide local startups, marking a significant step towards enhancing Manchester’s tech ecosystem. This launch follows concerns about Manchester’s ranking in access to mentorship opportunities.

Tech Manchester was inaugurated with a vision to enhance mentorship availability for budding tech enterprises in the city. This initiative addresses a crucial gap identified by Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who noted a report placing Manchester 34th among 60 UK cities for mentorship availability. By fostering a network of experienced mentors, Tech Manchester aims to improve the survival rate of local startups.

This event underscored the importance of community collaboration in establishing a vibrant tech sector. The proactive approach ensures startups receive the strategic advice needed to thrive in competitive markets.

She highlighted that mentoring could ‘move the needle significantly,’ aligning with the city’s ambition to emerge as the UK’s leading tech hub. This perspective aligns with initiatives spearheaded by influential figures like Andy Burnham and Lawrence Jones.

Gaynor Dykes of Grant Thornton and Angel Academe emphasized the value of expertise in early-stage business development. She advocates for startups to immerse themselves in expert advice from seasoned professionals.

Samantha Deakin-Hill, co-founder of Campus Capital, advised potential mentors to embrace their knowledge gaps openly. She encouraged them to confidently share what they know while remaining humble about areas where they lack expertise.

The event concluded with workshops allowing attendees to propose recommendations for shaping the mentorship scheme, ensuring it meets community needs.
