Stockport’s ambitious Exchange office development is set to enhance its offering with the addition of three new padel courts. This initiative is part of a broader regeneration project aimed at revitalising the area.
Located in a prime spot near Stockport train station, the padel courts’ introduction demonstrates a commitment to community wellbeing and modern leisure activities.
New Padel Courts in Stockport Exchange
The development of three padel courts is the latest addition to Stockport’s Exchange scheme. With a modern design, the courts will be situated between the train station and the A6, providing easy access for locals and visitors alike.
This project is a collaborative effort between the developer Muse and leisure operator Social Sports Society. They have submitted a planning application for the 1,500 sq m venue, highlighting a focus on enhancing local amenities.
Regeneration Efforts
The padel courts are part of Stockport’s wider £1 billion regeneration programme. This extensive initiative aims to transform the town’s infrastructure and boost economic growth.
The Exchange development has already seen significant progress. Companies like Music Magpie, BASF, ONP, and Stagecoach are based in the first two buildings, with a third building currently under construction.
A dilapidated row of shops on the A6 is earmarked for demolition to make way for the final phase of this comprehensive scheme.
Community-Centric Design
The new leisure facility will include a reception area designed by Manchester-based architecture firm IF_DO.
JMS Planning is responsible for submitting the application on behalf of the developer, emphasising the project’s professional and well-organised approach.
Ella Woodward, development manager at Muse, commented: “Having the opportunity to bring an offering like this to Stockport is fantastic for the area. Muse is deeply embedded in the town and through our work on Stockport Exchange and Stockport 8, we’ve spoken to lots of local people and businesses. The feedback we receive often focuses around the importance of wellbeing and community, so we believe that a new padel venue will be very well received.”
Padel: The Growing Sport
Padel is a rapidly growing racket sport that combines elements of tennis and squash. Played in doubles on an enclosed court, it offers a unique and engaging experience.
The game is played with walls of glass and metallic mesh, adding to its distinctive character.
Padel’s increasing popularity in the UK highlights a trend towards more diverse and accessible leisure activities.
Future Developments
Subject to planning approval, the padel courts are expected to open after the summer.
This announcement follows Social Sports Society’s recent launch of their Wembley Padel venue, which has set a precedent for community-focused sports facilities.
In addition to Stockport, further multi-sports venues are being developed nationwide, including a significant project in Brent Cross, London.
