Decathlon Stockport is set to launch a significant new 15-bay ultra-rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging hub, installed by the national charging network Be.EV. This will be the largest of its kind in Stockport, strategically located just minutes from the M60, benefiting local residents, shoppers, and commuters.
On Sunday, September 9, Be.EV will celebrate the launch of this innovative hub by offering drivers who use their app a special half-price charging rate between 12pm and 2pm. Additionally, free Padel taster sessions will be available at the nearby courts. Visitors will have the opportunity to test the latest electric bikes and receive a £5 voucher when they charge their car at the event. A Porsche Taycan will be available for drivers to experience and book test drives, courtesy of Stockport Porsche. Octopus Electric Vehicles will also demonstrate how EVs can power appliances at home and on camping trips.
The ultra-rapid chargers installed can add up to 165 miles of range in just 20 minutes, a considerable improvement compared to several hours on a conventional 7kW fast charger. This duration aligns with Decathlon’s average customer visit time of approximately 30 minutes. Already operational, Decathlon Stockport includes a PAS-compliant charging bay and integrates with the largest public EV charging network in the north, enhancing community connectivity and reliability.
The site, which receives up to 20,000 visitors per week and is moments away from a road handling over 87,000 vehicles daily, will greatly benefit Stockport’s close to 2,700 registered electric vehicle drivers. The majority of Be.EV’s facilities are located in the North West, with the primary goal of enabling communities to adopt sustainable practices. Asif Ghafoor, CEO and founder of Be.EV states, “It’s an honour to bring ultra-rapid, ultra-convenient EV charging to Decathlon shoppers, and provide Stockport with a new, reliable way to charge their vehicle. Charging hubs like these are required nationwide if the country is to successfully transition to cleaner transport.”
Liam Fillingham, real estate leader, comments, “Decathlon aims to move people through the wonders of sport with a strong focus on sustainability. The Stockport site is a great example of this in action. Not only do we have a fantastic store with many eco-designed products and services, now we also have our partners Be.EV and Soul Padel.”
The launch of this ultra-rapid charging hub marks a forward-thinking move towards sustainable transport in Stockport, benefiting both the environment and the community. It sets a standard for other retailers to follow as the transition to electric vehicles accelerates.
