Lori Hoinkes, originating from Canada, leverages her extensive experience in the global events industry to drive international events to Manchester. Appointed as the CEO of Manchester Central in May, she previously served as the Chief Growth Officer at Montgomery Group in London.

Hoinkes’ strategy includes forming academic partnerships and engaging with key figures like Duncan Ivison, the new president of the University of Manchester, also a Toronto native. Academic collaboration is central to her vision for Manchester Central.

Manchester Central’s Current Impact

Manchester Central is a significant economic driver for the city, attracting over half a million visitors annually and generating around £150m for the local economy. The venue boasts a diverse range of events, from intimate business meetings to large-scale conferences and trade shows.

In 2024, Manchester Central hosted 34 events and welcomed nearly 121,000 delegates, contributing £46.4m to the regional economy.

Niche Events and Global Appeal

Hoinkes sees a growing trend in niche events over large, generic exhibitions. This trend benefits Manchester Central, which excels in hosting specialized, unique events.

Manchester Central’s versatility is showcased through events like MegaCon Live, which drew over 15,000 attendees in July, highlighting the venue’s ability to cater to diverse audiences and organisers.

Hoinkes emphasizes, “North America remains a key market, but the European interest in Manchester is growing.”

Reinvigorating International Trade

International trade, subdued during the pandemic, is a focus for revitalisation. Hoinkes notes the importance of Manchester as a global city-region for investment and business post-pandemic.

High-profile events like the upcoming WOMEX music convention, expected to generate £28.3m, illustrate Manchester’s restored international appeal.

Collaborating with City Partners

Hoinkes is keen on understanding and aligning with local initiatives. Working closely with Marketing Manchester, she aims to boost the city’s global status.

By leveraging Manchester’s reputation as a proactive city and collaborating with strategic partners, we can achieve greater success,” she states.

The recent opening of Junction, a new social space at Manchester Central, is part of efforts to integrate the venue with the city’s fabric.

Hoinkes highlights Manchester Central’s substantial impact on the local economy, where every £1 spent at the venue generates £6 in the wider hospitality sector. Supporting high-growth sectors from the grassroots is a strategic priority.
