A new BBC documentary, part of the ‘Our Lives’ series, beautifully marries the picturesque vistas of the Lake District with the extreme sport of Free Solo Climbing. This ambitious project, undertaken by the Middlesbrough-based agency WANDER, showcases the raw and breathtaking landscapes while delving into the lives of climbers Anna and Mat as they embark on a daring ascent without ropes.
WANDER, recognised for its predominantly working-class roots, joins the eighth series of ‘Our Lives’, offering a unique perspective on life in the UK. The series is known for its focus on diverse life stories, ranging from everyday heroes to extraordinary feats. Anna and Mat’s gripping journey not only highlights their athletic prowess but tests their emotional resilience as they navigate some of the most perilous peaks in England.
The documentary does not shy away from addressing the personal and relational hurdles faced by the couple. As they climb some of the highest peaks without any form of safety gear, viewers witness a blend of triumphs and challenges. This portrayal adds depth to the narrative, showing the couple confronting significant questions about life and love amidst their pursuit.
CEO and Co-founder of WANDER, Chloe Clover, expressed her enthusiasm about the project, stating: “Filming this documentary was a wild adventure for our crew, as well as Anna and Mat. We loved every second of it… even when we were carrying the camera kit up mountains in the rain! The Lake District is a special place to us, so to be able to tell this story in such a beautiful region was just incredible.”
Further adding to the sentiments, Lou Tonner, also a Co-founder of WANDER, remarked on the significance of representing working-class talent on screen. The documentary, in many ways, encapsulates the essence of WANDER, celebrating both the natural beauty of the lakes and the impressive challenge of free solo climbing. Tonner articulated the importance of showcasing diversity within the television industry, pointing out the inspiring reality of their team’s background as they bring this documentary to life.
Diana Hare, BBC England TV commissioner, placed emphasis on ‘Our Lives’ as a platform that allows emerging talent to flourish. She commented on the series as a celebration of individuals and communities across the UK, and this year’s addition highlights the partnership with smaller production companies like WANDER, which play a crucial role in bringing diverse narratives to the fore.
The documentary is a testament to the resilience of Anna and Mat, underscored by the creativity and dedication of the WANDER team.
