Menstruation Friendly launched to support employers

Menstruation affects half the world’s population for a significant part of their life. Despite this, a stigma persists around openly discussing menstruation, particularly in the workplace.

Research conducted by Henpicked: Menstruation Friendly and FitrWoman surveyed over 750 employers and employees regarding menstrual health in professional environments. The Breaking the Cycle survey unveiled a situation that requires urgent attention. Approximately 76% of employees report that menstrual health symptoms adversely impact their work performance, and 61% express a desire for menstruation to be acknowledged as a valid reason for absence. Furthermore, 83% believe their workplace should implement a menstruation-friendly policy. However, 64% of employers have not received adequate training to confidently address menstrual health with their employees.

Menstrual health issues manifest differently among individuals, yet the survey highlighted common challenges in the workplace. Around 77% experience period pain or pre-menstrual tension, 55% encounter menstrual flooding or leaking, and 53% have been caught without period products. Additionally, 34% have found themselves in meetings or at workstations, unable to excuse themselves due to menstrual issues.

Addressing the taboo surrounding menstruation in professional settings is crucial for promoting gender equity and ensuring female employees feel valued and supported. The recently published BSI Menstruation, Menstrual Health and Menopause in the Workplace guidance (BS30416) emphasises the necessity for employers to instigate change. Although it may be challenging for managers to determine a starting point, the advantages of fostering a menstruation-friendly environment are substantial. By supporting female staff, employers can enhance gender equity, increase wellbeing, reduce absenteeism, and boost productivity. Moreover, fostering such an environment can help attract and retain talented individuals who seek employers demonstrating a commitment to employee welfare and equity.

In response to employer requests for guidance and resources, an award-winning, industry-recognised team has introduced a Menstruation Friendly community. This initiative aims to provide employer members with comprehensive on-site and online education and training resources. The Menstruation Friendly membership includes educational resources, workplace training, monthly webinars, a library of best practice policies, engagement toolkits, and masterclasses. This step-by-step programme assists employers in creating a supportive and inclusive workplace for female employees.

In conclusion, the launch of Menstruation Friendly marks a significant step towards addressing menstrual health in the workplace, promoting gender equity, and supporting female employees’ welfare.
