Sport:80, a leading tech platform based in Sheffield, is on a mission to revolutionise minority sports. Recently selected as one of Tech North’s Northern Stars, the company aims to ensure the sustainability and growth of lesser-known sports.
With a successful pitch that captivated an audience of over 300 people, Sport:80 has emerged as a promising force determined to reshape how minority sports are managed and funded.
“We’re trying to influence an industry that’s entrenched,” Turner stated. He highlighted the heavy reliance on government funding, particularly from Sport England, and emphasised the urgency of developing independent revenue streams to sustain minority sports.
Already, Sport:80 has been invited to a Government roundtable by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport. “Getting those doors open for us, and becoming part of the wider Northern Stars support network, is really exciting,” shared Turner.
The Paralympic sport of Boccia has particularly benefited from the platform. Members can enter events, sign up for coaching courses, and access a comprehensive competition management system.
Today, over 60 federations globally use this system, seeing significant improvements in event entries, automated draws, and live scoring.
“By the end of next year, the aim is to have a completely new platform which is scalable,” Turner disclosed. They are considering investment and an IPO to expedite growth further.
Three dedicated developers are focused on ensuring the platform’s adaptability and scalability to meet diverse client needs.
Sport:80’s innovative approach and dedication to minority sports are poised to make a lasting impact.
As they continue to expand and evolve, their influence on the sporting world is set to grow, ensuring that minority sports gain the recognition and support they deserve.
