BBC Radio 2 has announced its Autumn programming, spotlighting a fresh series led by renowned musician Johnny Marr. This new endeavour affirms the station’s commitment to delivering captivating content. Listeners have actively participated in selecting the ultimate British group, with The Beatles emerging as the top choice, reaffirming their timeless impact on the music scene.

Johnny Marr, known for his profound connection to music, is set to host a series titled ‘Johnny Marr’s Great British Groups’. This programme will journey through influential British bands from the 60s onwards, focusing on those who have significantly shaped the music industry. Marr expressed his enthusiasm for the series, stating, “The nice people at Radio 2 have invited me along to play some music by British bands from albums that I really like and maybe a couple of albums I’ve been involved in myself!”

The selection of the top 30 British music groups was a meticulous process. A panel of esteemed presenters, including Jo Whiley and Sara Cox, collaborated to distil a long list of nearly 100 bands down to an elite 54. Among these, iconic names such as Queen, The Rolling Stones, and Pink Floyd featured prominently, showcasing decades of British musical excellence.

Johnny Marr’s series will air on Radio 2, featuring a playlist that reflects not only his personal preferences but also the wider cultural impact of these bands. The series promises to cover a spectrum of music from the 33 RPM era, a nod to the traditional long-playing record format, and aims to reveal the dynamics of musical greatness and influence across generations.

Additionally, BBC Radio 2 will feature ‘The Great British Groups That Broke America’, which will delve into how bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Radiohead managed to captivate audiences across the Atlantic. This multifaceted approach underscores the global reach and enduring legacy of British music.
