Andy Bell, co-founder of AJ Bell and owner of a Michelin two-starred restaurant, has invested £1.2m in the healthy meal delivery provider Fuel Hub. The company, founded by former rugby league player James Laithwaite and his wife Michelle in 2019, targets elite athletes and sports organisations, providing chef-prepared, nutrition-focused meals across the UK.
Mr Bell, stepping down as AJ Bell’s CEO, partnered with former AJ Bell director Fergus Lyons to support the Warrington-based start-up. The investment comes as Fuel Hub aims to expand its B2B sports nutrition focus while maintaining its direct-to-consumer business. Mr and Mrs Laithwaite will retain a 50% ownership and continue as COO and CEO respectively.
The funds will enable Fuel Hub to move to a new 10,000 square ft facility, increasing its capacity to over 20,000 meals per week. Additionally, the company plans to double its staff to 30 within the next 12 months and significantly increase its partnerships with sports organisations. This investment marks a significant milestone in Fuel Hub’s growth journey, providing the means to enhance its operational capabilities and market reach.
Fuel Hub’s impressive client list includes EFL Championship teams, Fulham FC, Blackpool FC, Derby County, Catalan Dragons, and more. Its ability to deliver quality nutrition is crucial for athletes’ performance, both physically and mentally. James Laithwaite highlighted the importance of proper nutrition, stating, “The right food impacts your physical and mental well-being, crucial for performing at your best.”
Andy Bell praised the business, noting, “Great businesses need great products and great people. Fuel Hub has both.” Michelle Laithwaite expressed excitement about the investment, emphasizing their readiness to scale operations and collaborate with more sports organisations. Fuel Hub projects a turnover of £2m in 2022, a significant increase from just over £600,000 in 2021.
Fuel Hub’s strategic investment positions it for growth, aiming to enhance its service to elite athletes across the UK.
