Helix Arts has announced the launch of its new long-term initiative named the Artists’ Agency, aimed specifically at empowering artists and creatives in North Tyneside.

The Artists’ Agency, underpinned by the success of a prior year-long pilot, is designed to provide mentorship, networking, and peer-to-peer support. This programme is instrumental in bolstering North Shields’ reputation as a creative hub and is supported by funding from North Tyneside Council via the North East Combined Authority.

The initiative includes responsive workshops and networking events tailored to the evolving needs of artists. One-to-one mentorships, accompanied by bursaries, will offer personalised guidance to align with individual career aspirations. Peer-to-peer mentorship will foster collaboration and knowledge sharing within the community, while the ‘Make It Happen’ capacity-building course is specifically aimed at propelling artists’ careers forward.

Cheryl Gavin, Director of Helix Arts, stated, ‘We’ve engaged with over 70 artists and creative businesses to comprehend their challenges thoroughly. Our programme offers flexible, participant-centred support designed to provide tools necessary for overcoming obstacles and establishing sustainable careers.’ The programme is set to offer at least 12 hours of support to 70 participants over the next three years, addressing various stages of their artistic development.

‘I’m thrilled that the Artists’ Agency has received long-term funding following our successful pilot,’ Gavin continued. ‘Our goal is to assist local artists in growing, sharing their expertise, and building sustainable careers. This extended programme will enable artists to progress towards their professional aspirations consistently.’

Moreover, there is potential for the programme to extend beyond North Tyneside, with future collaborations anticipated with the North East Combined Authority. Karen Taws, North Shields Cultural Quarter Project Manager, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the programme’s role in fostering a thriving community of artists. ‘Helix Arts has created a wonderful community where artists can come together, discuss their ambitions, and share significant challenges. Helix Arts is making substantial opportunities for artists to collaborate and excel,’ Taws remarked.

This newly launched initiative by Helix Arts is poised to significantly enhance the careers of North Tyneside artists, providing them with essential resources and support as they navigate the complexities of the art industry.
