Multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy, Harley Haddow, has made a remarkable contribution to charity in a poignant tribute to two respected colleagues, Tom Barlow and Paul Phillips. The initiative honours their memory by supporting causes important to their families.

Tom Barlow and Paul Phillips, central figures in Harley Haddow’s Manchester office, were instrumental in establishing this branch. Paul, an enthusiastic supporter of Manchester City, and Tom, an admirer of Manchester United, left a lasting impact with their camaraderie and warmth. In their memory, the Harley Haddow team, which extends across the UK, embarked on a fundraising campaign, accumulating a symbolic 5843 miles through various activities such as cycling, walking, running, snowboarding, and skiing. The mileage reflects Tom’s age of 58 and Paul’s age of 43. The funds raised are directed towards The British Heart Foundation and North West Air Ambulance, the charities chosen by their families.

The campaign’s efforts culminated in a fundraising event in Manchester, alongside a raffle featuring prizes from esteemed golf clubs. Initially setting a goal of £5843 in April, the team surpassed expectations by raising over £7735, continuing to welcome donations. Contributions can be made via their Just Giving page.

Ian Chalk, Director at Harley Haddow, acknowledged the challenging start to the year marked by the untimely passings of Tom and Paul. He commended the team’s resilience and dedication in honouring their colleagues, stating, ‘Harley Haddow has dug deep and tried our best to move forward while honouring their memory and making a positive contribution to their families’ chosen charities.’ He emphasized the significance of the ‘Miles for Memories’ initiative not only as a means of gathering but also as a platform to raise awareness and funds for the vital work of the British Heart Foundation and North West Air Ambulance.

Hayley Gough, British Heart Foundation Regional Fundraising Manager, expressed profound gratitude for Harley Haddow’s remarkable efforts. She highlighted the critical role of donations in advancing life-saving research and appreciated the devoted colleagues for helping translate scientific breakthroughs into reality. Chris Andrews, Corporate Partnership Officer from North West Air Ambulance, also conveyed heartfelt thanks, stressing the importance of the raised funds in sustaining their operations, which do not receive government or NHS funding. He extended his condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Paul Phillips, recognizing the initiative as a commendable tribute.

Paul, who joined Harley Haddow in 2022 as a senior mechanical engineer, and Tom, who became part of the team in 2023 as electrical associate director, are further commemorated within the office premises, with dedicated areas named the ‘Phillips Suite’ and ‘Barlow Booth’. More information about the British Heart Foundation and North West Air Ambulance can be found on their respective websites.
