Alt Labs has partnered with TaperedPlus to create augmented reality technology that scans roofs using smartphones. This innovation is deemed transformative for the industry by Teesside-based TaperedPlus, as it eliminates traditional, time-consuming roof measurement methods and facilitates immediate data uploads.
Alt Labs in Middlesbrough was commissioned to develop the technology, which can be utilised on mobile phones or tablets to scan flat roofs and obtain highly accurate measurements. This advancement is significant because it does not necessitate substantial investment in hardware or expensive monthly subscriptions.
The collected data is uploaded to TaperedPlus’s internal system, where it is transformed into technical blueprints with remarkable speed—approximately ten times faster than traditional methods. ‘We are thrilled to be at the forefront of technological innovation within the roofing industry,’ said Aman Chahal, co-founder and CEO of TaperedPlus. ‘This AR system will significantly enhance our efficiency and accuracy, allowing us to better serve our customers and contribute to more sustainable building practices. The integration of AR and AI marks a significant milestone in our digital transformation, opening up new possibilities for growth and innovation.’
The software leverages light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors integrated into Apple smartphones and iPads. These sensors emit light, measuring the distance to target objects and enabling augmented reality to place markers that identify key points on a roof for precise measurements. ‘Our bespoke solution leverages cutting-edge technology to transform how roof measurements are captured and processed, setting new standards for the industry,’ added Imran Anwar, CEO of Alt Labs. ‘This technology is not only innovative but versatile, with the potential for wide-ranging applications across multiple sectors. By utilising LiDAR and augmented reality, we are able to provide unprecedented accuracy and efficiency, which could prove a real gamechanger.’
This development follows a recent investment of £5.5 million in TaperedPlus by BGF. Additionally, the company is collaborating with academics at Teesside University on a separate initiative aimed at developing a system that employs Artificial Intelligence to streamline its technical drawing processes.
The partnership between Alt Labs and TaperedPlus exemplifies the significant impact that augmented reality and advanced technology can have on traditional industries. By integrating AR and AI, the roofing industry stands on the cusp of a digital transformation, promising enhanced efficiency, precision, and sustainable practices.
