FinTech North has appointed its inaugural chairman as it enters a significant phase of growth since its establishment in 2016.

Chris Sier, HM Treasury FinTech Envoy, expressed that his new role aligns well with his professional interests and passion for the regional economy. Sier has been a keynote speaker at FinTech North’s inaugural conference in 2016 and has chaired the Leeds conference for the past two years. Additionally, he delivered keynotes at the 2018 conferences in Manchester and Liverpool.

Sier is a prominent advocate of regional FinTech and innovation. He currently holds academic positions as a Professor of Financial Technology at the University of Leeds and Professor of Practice at Newcastle University Business School. Julian Wells, a director, confirmed Sier’s appointment, highlighting Sier’s long-standing support for FinTech North’s objectives, including fostering a vibrant regional FinTech community in northern England.

Sier’s experience spans roles as FinTech Envoy for the Northern Powerhouse, advising the UK government and regulators on innovation and FinTech. He also advises trade bodies on pension fund corporate governance and cost transparency. Recently, he chaired the Financial Conduct Authority’s board investigating information asymmetries and costs in the asset management industry, stemming from a 2017 market study on asset management.

Sier stated, ‘The UK benefits from a robust financial services sector and a forward-thinking regulator. While London plays a significant role in the global FinTech economy, regional UK cities have much to offer on both national and international fronts, with the Northern Powerhouse possessing substantial potential. I’d like to see more collaboration across northern cities, and I believe FinTech North is ideally positioned to create the integrated environment and community necessary for the region to thrive.’

Chris Sier’s appointment as the first chairman marks a pivotal moment for FinTech North, as it aims to enhance regional collaboration and innovation.
