Filming is underway on a new drama centred on the heart-breaking real-life story of Ann Ming and her relentless fight for justice. Starring Sheridan Smith in the lead role, the series titled I Fought The Law is set to captivate audiences with its portrayal of one mother’s unwavering battle to overturn the Double Jeopardy Law and see her daughter’s murderer brought to justice.

The series, written by Jamie Crichton and based on Ann Ming’s book For The Love of Julie, recounts the story of Ann Ming, who navigated a 15-year long, arduous journey to ensure her daughter’s murderer faced the consequences of his actions. Despite two mistrials and a controversial acquittal, Ming’s persistent efforts bore fruit, bringing significant changes to the legal landscape.

Featuring a robust cast, including Daniel York Loh as Charlie Ming and Enzo Cilenti as DS Mark Braithwaite, the drama extends its narrative to reveal the depths of familial grief and the indomitable spirit required in the pursuit of justice. Also starring Marlowe Chan-Reeves, Olivia Ng, Jake Davies, Victoria Wyant, Kent Riley, Jack James Ryan, Andrew Lancel, and Rufus Jones, I Fought The Law paints a detailed picture of the challenges faced by the Ming family.

The story revolves around the disappearance of 22-year-old Julie Ming in November 1989. Following her late shift at a local pizza shop, Julie’s body was discovered concealed in her bathroom in January 1990, 80 days after her disappearance. Notably, her body was found hidden behind the bath panel, a fact missed by police forensic teams during the initial days of the investigation, leading to widespread dissatisfaction with Cleveland Constabulary’s handling of the case.

Amid overwhelming grief, Ann Ming’s determination saw her challenging senior police officers, applying pressure on investigative teams, and advocating tirelessly for her daughter’s case. Her relentless pursuit saw her confront the Criminal Justice System, the Crown Prosecution Service, eminent Defence Barristers, the Government, and various legal authorities.

Commissioned by ITV, the drama is overseen by Head of Drama, Polly Hill, and Senior Drama Commissioner Helen Ziegler. The production is managed by Hera Pictures, known for works such as Mary & George and Temple, in association with All3Media International. Filming is currently taking place across Teesside and surrounding areas, supported by the North East Production Fund, which promotes the region as a significant hub for film and TV production.

Directed by Erik Richter Strand and produced by Mark Hedges, I Fought The Law is poised for international distribution through All3Media. The North East Screen is integral to the project, developing and championing North East England as a key location for exceptional screen industry talent. Their involvement ensures that the series not only brings a poignant real-life story to screen but also highlights the region’s growing importance in the film and TV industry.

I Fought The Law will air on ITV1 and ITVX, promising a gripping and emotionally charged depiction of Ann Ming’s fight for justice that reshaped the legal system in the United Kingdom.
