UrbanChain, a notable disruptor in the energy market based in Manchester, has relocated to the expansive 91,000 sq ft Base at Manchester Science Park. This move, marked by the signing of a five-year lease for 4,000 sq ft, aims to support UrbanChain’s growth ambitions by attracting the necessary talent.
UrbanChain has collaborated closely with the site management team to design and fit-out the new office, signifying a new phase of sophistication for the company. This relocation aligns with UrbanChain’s expansion plans, supported by the European investment group Eurazeo. UrbanChain’s unique approach decouples renewable energy and consumers from the volatile wholesale market, creating a new market mechanism where renewables can be sold directly to consumers. This model facilitates the provision of affordable and viable green energy without reliance on subsidies.
UrbanChain’s innovative platform, which is backed by blockchain technology and powered by artificial intelligence, supports transactions among diverse participants including office buildings, data centres, hospitals, universities, and green energy generators. This regulated platform enhances trade efficiency and market transparency.
The new premises at Base are designed with sustainability in mind, featuring Net Zero Carbon operations across communal areas, an A-rated EPC, 704 sq m of PV solar power, a hybrid heating and cooling system, and the use of recycled materials for flooring. This aligns with UrbanChain’s ethos of promoting green energy solutions.
Somayeh Taheri, the founder and CEO of UrbanChain, highlighted the significance of the move: ‘Ofgem granted UrbanChain an electricity supply licence a handful of weeks ago, triggering another breakthrough in our journey. As we also now embark on a Series B fundraise, we feel we have a working environment which aligns our talented workforce with our UK and international growth strategy.’
Josh Whiteley, Commercial Director for the site management team, welcomed UrbanChain, noting their impressive growth journey from a single desk in 2018 to occupying various spaces within the park, ultimately culminating in their new state-of-the-art office at Base.
Manchester Science Park hosts over 150 businesses specialising in areas such as Industry 4.0, software engineering, energy, diagnostics, and medical technology, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment.
UrbanChain’s move to larger premises at Manchester Science Park signifies a strategic step towards realising its growth and sustainability objectives.
