Construction on the transformative Salford Rise project has officially begun. This five-acre scheme is a significant part of the £2.5bn Crescent Salford masterplan.

Designed to bridge the University of Salford campus with the Crescent innovation zone, this development aims to enhance connectivity, provide green spaces, and promote active travel.

The Salford Rise project, executed by ECF in partnership with Legal & General, Homes England, and Muse, aims to break down physical barriers between communities north of the Crescent area. Instead, these barriers will be replaced with walking and cycling routes, significantly enhancing accessibility and promoting active travel. Large green spaces, trees, and public squares for events will be introduced to improve the quality of life.

Eric Wright Civil Engineering, based in Preston, has been appointed as the main contractor for this project. Their expertise is crucial in realising the ambitious design vision.

Preparatory and ground works will continue throughout 2024. The construction of the bridge structure is set to begin in early 2025 and is expected to be completed by summer 2026.

The comprehensive nature of the Crescent masterplan reflects its ambition. It aims to foster a dynamic and integrated community.

The collaboration between academia and industry is a cornerstone of the project’s vision. This partnership is expected to drive forward world-class research and development.

Vice-Chancellor at the University of Salford, Prof Nic Beech, applauded the project as a prime example of innovative regeneration. He stated, “This work will develop and enhance our local environment and provide vital sustainable travel options for students, colleagues, and visitors accessing our University campus and the surrounding areas.”

Max King, Project Director (North West) at ECF, emphasised the significance of the project commencement. He remarked, “Starting on site at Salford Rise and seeing the first spade in the ground marks a landmark staging post as we begin to bring the vision for Crescent Salford to life.

The Salford Rise project marks a significant step in the Crescent Salford masterplan, aiming to transform the local area through improved connectivity and green spaces.

As the project progresses towards its 2026 completion, it promises to foster collaboration, innovation, and sustainable development for the Salford community.
