Work is set to commence on transforming Bury’s derelict former police station site into two extensive care homes.

The Irwell Street location will soon host facilities designed to cater to individuals with complex needs, generating substantial employment opportunities.

Work on Bury’s former police station site is set to begin before the end of the year. The location, adjacent to the Castle Leisure Centre, has remained vacant since the police station’s demolition in 2018.

The site will be divided into two parcels, with the northern parcel near Lower Bank Street receiving full planning permission. Construction will focus on creating residential spaces and essential amenities.

Bury’s planning committee has approved Exemplar Healthcare’s initiative to construct two care homes. The unanimous decision reflects the project’s alignment with the community’s needs and aspirations.

The southern parcel, towards Jubilee Way, has received outline permission and will be developed in a subsequent phase, ensuring a comprehensive and phased approach to the site’s development.

Exemplar Healthcare’s design promises to cater to up to 80 residents with complex needs.

The care homes will support adults living with mental health conditions, neuro-disabilities such as brain injuries and Parkinson’s, and physical disabilities including cerebral palsy and spinal injuries.

The facilities are designed to assist individuals with severe learning disabilities or autism spectrum disorder, offering specialised care for a diverse demographic. This inclusivity marks a significant step in providing equitable health services.

The project is expected to create around 100 jobs.

New roles will range from nursing staff to administrative and support positions, contributing to the local economy’s revitalisation.

Each parcel will include a care home equipped with necessary amenities such as access points, parking, and landscaped areas, ensuring a holistic living environment.

These features aim to enhance the residents’ quality of life, promoting a sense of community and well-being within the facility.

Exemplar Healthcare’s facilities are tailored for adults of all ages, with the majority being of working age.

Providing care for a broad age range, from young adults to the elderly, the care homes aim to offer flexible services that adapt to various needs and conditions.

With work expected to kick off soon, the northern parcel’s development will lead the transformation effort, emphasizing a structured and strategic approach.

The phased development ensures that each stage is completed to the highest standards, setting a precedent for quality and care in facility construction.

The transformation of Bury’s former police station site into care homes marks a vital development for the community.

This initiative not only provides essential services for residents with complex needs but also stimulates economic growth through job creation.
