Bruntwood is set to transform Leeds city centre with its Platform project, shining a light on the region’s digital art scene.

Slated to launch in November 2017, the 13-storey Platform building will host the Leeds Tech Hub, fostering innovation within a vibrant community.

The new Platform development aims to elevate local digital media artists, offering them a prominent venue to display their cutting-edge work. By providing workspace for over 1,000 individuals, Bruntwood fosters collaboration among entrepreneurs and tech start-ups, embedding them in a creatively charged environment.

An integral feature of the initiative is an LCD media wall in the reception, designed to highlight digital installations. This technology platform will not only showcase art but also invigorate ideas within the building.

Bruntwood’s alignment with Leeds’ Capital of Culture bid underscores its dedication to the arts. Forming partnerships with Leeds Beckett School of Art and West Yorkshire Playhouse, it creates substantial opportunities for artists.

The installation of the UK’s largest mural, Athena Rising by Nomad Clan, heralds the building’s commitment. The artistic opus is just one aspect of Bruntwood’s cultural investment, inviting artists specialising in various media to participate.

Artists using photography, video, and animation are invited to submit daring and experimental ideas. Bruntwood encourages the inclusion of interactive elements like live data and sound, expanding the canvas of possibilities.

The impressive media wall consists of 24 screens, arranged in a 12×2 formation, offering a grand platform for artists.

Craig Burrow, Leeds director at Bruntwood, notes, “Platform focuses on tech and creative businesses, with its digital wall showcasing the city’s talent.”

Platform provides an unprecedented opportunity for emerging artists to make their mark in a city centre landmark. Initial works are sought to resonate with the specific media display.

The commission is available to artists aged 18 and above, allowing them to submit comprehensive proposals.

Simon Bushell, arts co-ordinator, explains the space’s potential in “unearthing great ideas for future use.”

With collaborations involving Leeds BID and East Street Arts, Platform is already a living canvas that enriches local culture.

Bruntwood’s dedication to the arts, including its backing of the Leeds Capital of Culture bid, seeks to enhance the city’s cultural reputation.

The ongoing support extends beyond the initial launch, promising a dynamic exhibition future.

The submission process is straightforward: a CV and a statement outlining previous work and concept ideas are required. Links to online portfolios can complement applications.

Successful applicants will receive a paid commission, with installations set to commence in October 2017.

The visible location ensures public engagement, making the art accessible to all.

Bruntwood is exploring new digital dimensions to refresh traditional art venues. The media wall stands as a testament to this commitment.

By integrating technology into artistic expression, Bruntwood challenges conventional art exhibitions, turning them into immersive experiences.

Bruntwood’s Platform is set to redefine the digital arts scene in Leeds, providing opportunities for artists and enriching the cultural landscape.

The initiative fosters creativity and collaboration, ensuring a vibrant future for Leeds’ artistic community.
