Tech Nation’s UK tour reached Birmingham, highlighting the city’s burgeoning tech sector, invigorated by a recent 5G trial.
Birmingham, a city renowned for its engineering history and manufacturing success, is now placing a significant emphasis on digital technology. Entrepreneurs and tech experts are gathering at Fazeley Studios to discuss opportunities for start-ups in the West Midlands. During the event, Tech Nation’s insights team will present data on Birmingham, initiating discussions on the challenges faced by local entrepreneurs and start-ups.
The panel discussion will be moderated by Cliff Dennett, head of business development, and will feature prominent figures such as Melissa Snover, CEO of Magic Candy Factory, Jill Palmer, CEO of Click Travel, Julia Hawkins, partner at LocalGlobe, and Tong Gu, investment lead at investor ADV. MB Christie, chief operations officer at Tech Nation, remarked on the rapid growth of Birmingham’s digital tech sector, noting the impact of new infrastructure and the 5G network trial. Christie also highlighted Birmingham’s diverse talent pool, second only to London, which benefits companies when recruiting skilled staff.
The momentum in Birmingham’s tech scene is further supported by initiatives such as the Midlands Engine Investment fund. Melissa Snover chose Birmingham for her 3D printing business due to its excellent transport links and the presence of prestigious universities specialising in 3D printing. According to Tech Nation research, the number of tech businesses in Birmingham grew by 351% from 2006 to 2016. Codemasters, a notable digital tech company headquartered in nearby Leamington Spa, raised £185 million on the UK AIM market and has contributed to a network of gaming companies in the area.
Birmingham was recently selected as the UK’s first large-scale test area for 5G technology, which promises broadband speeds up to 100 times faster than 4G. This advancement is expected to enhance services in various sectors, including public transportation and healthcare. Ross Spencer, head of marketing at Click Travel, expressed confidence in Birmingham’s potential to revolutionise business travel through new technology.
Meanwhile, Tech Nation is launching Rising Stars, a new national competition for early-stage tech companies, building on the success of Northern Stars. This competition aims to identify the best tech startups across the UK and provide them with opportunities to elevate their profiles and expand their businesses.
