Schneider Electric is making a significant investment of £42 million in a new manufacturing facility in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, which is set to create over 200 new jobs. This facility aims to meet the rising demand for electrical equipment essential for the UK’s transition to cleaner energy sources, such as renewable energy, electric vehicles, and intelligent, energy-efficient buildings.
The forthcoming site, nearly three times the size of Schneider Electric’s existing facility in Scarborough, will serve as a model for sustainable design and operations within the manufacturing sector. It is designed to be a net-zero plant, utilising modern technology to minimise energy waste and maximise renewable energy usage. Net-zero status in Scope 1 and 2 emissions is expected upon its opening in early 2025.
Approximately 30% of the facility’s energy will be generated through a sophisticated solar energy system, with solar panels covering half of the roof to capture solar energy effectively. Additionally, any energy required from the national grid will be ‘renewable certified’ to ensure all electricity used is sustainably sourced.
An intelligent Building Management System, based on the EcoStruxure platform, will guarantee energy-efficient operations. This includes the implementation of light sensors, as well as automated heating and cooling systems. Notably, the facility will feature one of Europe’s first fully electric paint lines to support the ambition of decarbonised operations.
The site is targeting a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, which signifies superior sustainable construction standards. Additionally, environmentally friendly transport options will be available for employees with access to 30 EV chargers onsite. Dedicated cycling racks, shelters, and showers will also be provided to promote sustainable commuting alternatives.
Efforts are underway to work with Natural England to create a habitat that supports protected species and promotes biodiversity by preserving as many existing trees and natural features as possible. This further underscores the environmental commitment of the new facility.
Schneider Electric’s Scarborough location has long been a key manufacturing base, employing 450 people and specialising in producing low-voltage switchgears. These components are crucial for sustainable and energy-efficient operations, such as EV charging infrastructure and net-zero buildings.
