A £1m loan from the Flexible Growth Fund has led to the opening of a new manufacturing hub for Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) in Knowsley, generating 25 jobs and contributing to the Liverpool City Region’s ambition to achieve net zero carbon by 2035.
The new manufacturing hub, initiated by a modern construction firm, is expected to produce Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs), which are pivotal for the construction of energy-efficient homes. This development underscores the region’s commitment to modern methods of construction (MMC) and sustainable building practices.
The construction firm, which began its journey in 1928, has been at the forefront of innovation, particularly with the development of SIPs for residential applications since 2007. These panels offer enhanced airtightness and insulation compared to traditional masonry methods, resulting in homes that are cheaper to heat and provide a higher standard of living.
The firm collaborates with local housing associations to develop low-carbon homes that can be built quickly and are cost-effective to heat, addressing the housing shortage while significantly reducing energy bills for occupants.
The opening of the new plant was officiated by the Liverpool City Region Mayor, who remarked that the initiative exemplifies the purpose of the Flexible Growth Fund—empowering local companies to innovate and create jobs. The Mayor highlighted the hub’s role in driving the region towards becoming a leader in modern, energy-efficient construction and achieving net zero status by 2035.
According to the Cabinet Member for Business, Investment and Trade, this loan will enable the firm to remain at the cutting edge of the construction sector, fostering job creation for the local community.
The firm’s Managing Director described the hub’s opening as transformative, noting that the new press machine will accelerate the construction of affordable social housing, providing safe and sustainable homes. He emphasised the importance of a fabric-first approach to sustainable buildings, ensuring long-term energy efficiency and optimised performance for the lifetime of the buildings.
