The Fintech Awards London 2023, a prominent event in Fintech Week London, highlighted the significant contributions of fintech companies and professionals in London and the UK.
The awards ceremony, held at The Underglobe beneath Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre on 21 June 2023, attracted numerous guests from the global fintech sector. Julia Streets, founder and CEO of Streets Consulting, hosted the event.
Peer-to-peer lending service Zopa, which started operations in 2005 and obtained a full banking licence in 2020, received the Fintech Company of the Year award. Meanwhile, Banked, a London-based account-to-account payment software platform, was named Fintech Startup of the Year.
Gerard Grech, founding chief executive of Tech Nation and a long-time adviser to the UK government on technology policies, was honoured for his outstanding individual contribution to the fintech industry. Tech Nation, known for supporting the growth of UK tech firms, has influenced over 5,000 businesses since its inception. With more than 20 years in the tech industry, Grech has been instrumental in the development of numerous digital products.
Matt Hyde, managing director at the awards, asserted, “The Fintech Awards London is pleased to acknowledge some of the best-performing firms and individuals providing financial services for the UK. Gerard Grech has had a level of impact like few others on the London tech startup sector and greatly deserved recognition with this award for Outstanding Contribution to Fintech in London.”
Andrew Griffith MP, Economic Secretary to the Treasury and City Minister, described the awards as “an important platform for showcasing the best and brightest in the fintech industry”. He emphasised the government’s commitment to supporting the sector’s growth and acknowledged the role of such events in highlighting fintech’s contributions to the economy.
The event also received support from multiple sponsors, including several notable organisations.
The winners from various categories were: Fintech Company of the Year: Zopa, Fintech Startup of the Year: Banked, Fintech Scale-up of the Year: Allica Bank, Fintech Leader of the Year: Nick Harding – Fluro, Fintech New Product of the Year: Hi Group, Fintech Advisory Firm of the Year: Peel Hunt, Wealthtech Company of the Year: Smart Pension, Paytech Company of the Year: Boku, Regtech Company of the Year: Quantexa, Fintech for Good: FLOW GLOBAL, and Insurtech Company of the Year: FintechOS. Gerard Grech received the award for Outstanding Contribution to Fintech in London.
The Fintech Awards London 2023 once again recognised and celebrated the exceptional achievements of fintech companies and individuals, further emphasising the vital role of the fintech sector in the UK economy.
