In an era of rapid digitisation, it is crucial for businesses to remain ahead by leveraging technology effectively. The North East Business Awards 2024 recognises this reality, honouring the region’s leading companies, with the prestigious event set to occur on 3rd October at Hardwick Hall Hotel in Sedgefield.
Jonathan Cowan, Chief of Staff at a prominent software company, has spotlighted the North East’s burgeoning tech and innovation scene as a key area for growth. ‘Unlike the Green Day song, for me, September isn’t about endings – it’s a time for new beginnings. This year feels even more special as my twin daughters get ready to start their first year at university. Seeing them take this big step makes me think about how the North East is on the verge of its own exciting journey. The tech and innovation boom here is a rare opportunity, and the possibilities for what we can achieve are truly energising,’ he said.
The North East Combined Authority’s £1.4 billion investment fund aims to close the digital skills gap and position the region as a competitive force on a global stage. Initiatives include the Tackling Insights programme, which uses smart rugby ball technology to make STEM learning engaging, and an apprenticeship programme that has supported over 700 apprentices in the past seven years. Additionally, a £1.4 million investment in skill development programmes is ensuring that young people are equipped to succeed in the evolving job market. By working together, significant progress in digital education and skill development is being made, thereby fueling regional growth and maintaining the UK’s competitive edge.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming various industries, and efforts within the North East are no exception. Cowan emphasised, ‘At our firm, we’re committed to helping these businesses digitise safely, and we’re working hard to foster a culture of trusted AI among the SMBs we support. One of the biggest challenges is closing the data gap – without digital information, it’s hard to fully tap into what AI can offer.’ AI technologies, such as their pioneering product, Copilot, streamline operations by reducing the time spent on repetitive tasks, making it easier for businesses to focus on growth and innovation.
Now is the time for businesses to embrace technological advancements and drive innovation. Their efforts not only foster company growth but also create valuable opportunities for the next generation. Cowan elaborated, ‘The North East has the talent, resources, and ambition to become the UK’s Silicon Valley, and we’re ready to help make that happen.’
The North East is positioned for significant transformation, with substantial investments and initiatives paving the way for a digital revolution. By embracing these opportunities, businesses are set to become leaders in innovation, contributing to both regional and national economic growth.
