Software engineer and model Lyndsey Scott has directly responded to those questioning her coding abilities. Scott, a former Victoria Secret model, is well-known for advocating coding and promoting women’s involvement in tech. However, a recent Instagram photo captioned ‘Coding is for anyone’ attracted sceptical comments from some users.
The picture was posted by a programming community account, and some commenters expressed disbelief regarding her coding skills, while others suggested that even if she could code, she likely wasn’t very proficient. In retaliation, Scott shared a picture on her personal account, detailing her qualifications and naming the technology firms she has worked for.
Scott noted, ‘I’m only stating facts in the hope I’ll convince at least one negative commenter that programmers can come in all shapes, sizes, genders, races, et cetera. So I hope they’ll think twice before doubting other women and girls they encounter in tech.’
Currently, Scott is the lead Apple iOS software engineer at a US-based crowdfunding site, RallyBound, among other projects. She mentioned that her income from coding significantly supports her in pursuing other interests.
‘It’s clear that there are plenty of women and men in tech that would love for things to change. As the tech industry becomes more and more central to the world economy, I think representation will become more and more crucial,’ she told the BBC.
Additionally, Scott shared that her schedule is quite unique compared to most tech professionals as she only undertakes remote contracting work. She expressed her gratitude for the flexibility programming affords her, allowing her to balance her acting auditions and classes. ‘Without the income from my programming work, I probably wouldn’t have nearly as much freedom to devote time to everything I’m passionate about.’
The 31-year-old has also received significant support from the community, especially from other women in tech. One commenter appreciated her saying, ‘Thank you, Lyndsey. As a woman in technology, I have faced years of men “challenging” my credibility. The ridiculous idea that women in tech have to fit some predefined image is exhausting. You are awesome.’ Another supported her by mentioning, ‘As a fellow software engineer, I can confirm that we come in many forms. You’re an inspiration for choosing to follow your passions both technical and creative. Go get ’em!’
Lyndsey Scott’s assertive response to the trolls has highlighted the ongoing challenges women face in the tech industry. Her determination and success stand as an inspiration, reinforcing the idea that programming truly is for everyone.
