Sophie Straw, portrayed by the talented Gemma Arteton, is back for the eagerly anticipated second series of ‘Funny Woman,’ premiering on Sky Max and streaming service NOW on 6th September.
The new series continues to explore the life of Sophie Straw, a beloved television comedy star who has captured the hearts of viewers across the nation. At the beginning of the second series, Sophie is enjoying significant success both professionally and personally. She is surrounded by a close-knit group of friends, and her romantic relationship with Dennis appears to be flourishing.
However, not all is smooth sailing for Sophie. Dennis’s prolonged divorce process, which is expected to take three years, creates tension. Additionally, her new sitcom receives poor reviews, and she makes a troubling discovery about her family, adding to her emotional turmoil.
To cope with these challenges, Sophie takes on a leading role in a film opposite a charming French movie star. The film becomes a success, and Sophie’s new U.S. agent presents her with an opportunity to reinvent herself in Hollywood. Despite this enticing offer, Sophie chooses to return to London. Her aim is to reunite her old team and develop a new show that reflects her real experiences, challenging outdated societal norms.
Gemma Arteton, reflecting on the new series, remarked, “Sophie goes on quite a big journey. Everyone knows she’s funny and she has a sitcom that’s very close to her and her personality. In the new series, she broadens her abilities. She goes to do a French film and tries to be a serious actress before realising that her passion is in comedy. She starts to break new ground by writing a show called ‘Flatbirds’ about two women. She does have some low moments too – she has issues with Dennis and has a falling out with Marge – but with time she manages to pull things back together and bucks societal expectation.”
The upcoming series promises to deliver a blend of humour and heartfelt moments while continuing to challenge cultural conventions. Fans can look forward to watching Sophie Straw navigate her professional and personal journey with resilience and wit.
