LinkedIn has unveiled its annual Top Startups list, with Monzo, the mobile-only challenger bank, securing the top position for the second consecutive year.
The list, which ranks the 25 most ‘sought-after’ UK start-ups based on LinkedIn member engagement, includes 13 technology start-ups such as Improbable, Revolut, and Starling Bank. Monzo is on the verge of joining the elite group of British unicorns, companies valued at over $1 billion, following its announcement of an upcoming funding round.
Tara Mansfield, head of people at Monzo, remarked, “Our internal community is so important and crucial to the success of Monzo as a whole so we’re very happy to be named in LinkedIn’s 2018 Top Startups list again this year.” This recognition coincides with Monzo’s impressive growth over the past year, expanding from 161 to nearly 400 employees and reaching a milestone of one million customers.
A notable portion of the list features other challenger banks, while 56% of it is comprised of tech companies, including health consultation app Babylon Health and live sports streaming service DAZN. Among the other companies listed are the Bitcoin wallet start-up Blockchain, direct debit processing business GoCardless, and digital engineering consultancy Contino.
The list also includes recruitment start-up Beamery, fintech cloud payment platform CurrencyCloud, and app-based bank Tandem. Orlando Crowcroft, UK news editor at LinkedIn, stated, “Our list this year represents a diverse range of industries, from digital marketing to fintech, and shows how British tech startups are changing everything from the way we save money to how we find a job or buy a house.”
Crowcroft further highlighted the significance of these start-ups in the current economic and political climate, noting their commitment to innovation and invention. According to LinkedIn’s data, these companies are not only experiencing remarkable growth but are also highly attractive workplaces for LinkedIn members.
Monzo’s achievement in topping LinkedIn’s Top Startups list underscores its rapid growth and the broader impact of technology-driven start-ups in the UK. This accolade affirms the transformative role these companies play in various industries, from finance to digital marketing.
