More than 400 people have begun their film and TV careers through the Liverpool City Council Film Office’s Action! programme. Within just six months, over 130 entrants have secured paid positions in the industry, reflecting the programme’s early success.
In addition to work placements, 108 individuals have received free training to prepare for future opportunities. Meanwhile, 191 others have enrolled, ready to receive ongoing support and training over the next two years.
Programme Overview
Action!, managed by the Liverpool City Council Film Office, aims to cultivate a skilled and diverse workforce in the film and TV sectors. Over six months, it provided paid work for participants on various productions, including high-end television series and major feature films.
Since its launch, Action! has held six free introductory courses covering various aspects of the industry, from location sourcing to the role of assistant directors. These sessions are designed to equip newcomers with the skills needed for successful careers in film and TV.
Practical Training and Workshops
Participants benefitted from masterclasses led by industry experts. One notable session featured Emma Pill, a supervising location manager known for her work on blockbuster films like ‘1917’ and ‘Inception’.
Additionally, creator of ‘The Responder’, Tony Schumacher, hosted a popular Q&A session, offering insights into the realities of the industry and freelancing. These interactive sessions provided invaluable guidance and networking opportunities for attendees.
Future Opportunities
More training initiatives are on the horizon, focused on enhancing technical skills. Upcoming masterclasses will cover camera techniques, lighting, and special effects make-up.
Action! members will also receive CV advice and participate in workshops to improve soft skills and proficiency with industry-standard tools. These efforts aim to ensure participants are well-rounded and job-ready.

Helen Morgan, crew development manager and lead for Action!, expressed her pride in the programme’s accomplishments. She highlighted the journey of trainees, from initial career surgeries to securing paid work on prestigious productions.
One significant achievement was securing employment for 112 new entrants over just 12 days on a major city centre project. The programme’s impact is evident in these success stories, showcasing the potential for sustained career growth.

Action! was made possible through £2.3 million of BFI National Lottery funding. This financial support underscores the commitment to developing the screen sector in the North of England.
The programme is delivered by Screen Alliance North, a partnership involving Liverpool Film Office, North East Screen, Screen Manchester, and Screen Yorkshire. Together, they strive to make the industry more accessible and representative.
Eligibility and Accessibility
The programme is free and open to anyone aged 18 and over who resides in the Liverpool City Region and is not currently in higher or further education. This inclusivity ensures a wider range of participants can benefit.
